Pike Fishing Tackle Essentials
Pike fishing is a great sport and is enjoyed by so many
people worldwide, to make the most of it and too do it
safely so that you are not harming the fish; you are going
to require a few extras in your pike fishing tackle from
your ordinary tackle setups. This article will cover some of
the essentials you will need.
There are so many different aspects of pike fishing that you
need to think about before you purchase your equipment. You
need to think about what is going to be best for your
fishing experience and also more importantly what you will
need so that these brilliant pike aren’t harmed.
Now a run down of the basics that will make up your pike
fishing tackle equipment, you are going to need:
A rod, Reels, Line, Hooks, Trace wire and bite indication.
These are the essentials for pike fishing but you are also
|
going to need a few extra tools to make your fishing
experience easier and safer, these include, long forceps,
wire cutters and long nosed pliers. It is also essential
that you carry these in your pike fishing tackle set as you
will need them when unhooking your pike. If you were to try
and reach in and take the hook out of a pikes mouth then you
are risking losing your fingers. Pike have extremely sharp
teeth.
All pike fishing tackle needs to be strong as these fish are
extremely powerful and aggressive. Now lets move on to what
types of these equipment we will need.
Firstly when purchasing a rod I would recommend that you get
one that is about 12ft long and has a test curve of 2.75lbs
and above, anything less and there isn’t really any point of
fishing for pike as a pike can easily break the rod if they
are big enough. The higher the test curves the better as
well because you can use a wider variety of baits and
different lead sizes.
Right next is the line, when getting your line I would
recommend getting one that has 16lbs breaking strain, at
least. If you get less then you are risking the chance of
the line failing you after a period of time, so to be on the
safe side 16lbs is probably the safest bet to start with.
You will also want to have use mono rather than braid as the
abrasion resistance quality of mono is so much better than
braid which I find is nowhere near as good.
Next on the list for your pike fishing tackle is to get a
reel, when looking for a reel you should look for one that
has about 15lb mono which will easily be enough for general
pike fishing.
Next and the most important piece of equipment that there is
in your pike fishing tackle is a trace wire. Now without a
trace wire you may as well give up before you even begin.
Without the trace wire a pike will bite straight through
your line with its amazingly sharp teeth and therefore ruin
your pike fishing experience. Now the best kind of trace
wire is probably the 7 strand over the 29 strand as they are
easier to use and don’t get muddled up so easily. When
getting your trace wire you will probably want to be looking
at ones with about 30lb or more on it. |
Your pike fishing tackle is almost complete, the next piece
of equipment on the list are hooks, now I think most people
will agree with me here that treble hooks are probably the
best hooks to get. All you need to do when getting hooks is
to make sure that they are not easily bendable and that they
are very sharp. If they are bendable they have a tendency of
straightening which is not helpful when trying to catch
fish.
The last piece of pike fishing tackle that I am going to
cover in this article is bite indication, this part of your
tackle helps you know when you have got a bite, you can get
these in different types giving you visual or audible
indications. If you can I would recommend using both, they
also help you so that when you catch a fish you can quickly
start trying to catch it rather than deep hooking the pike,
which can be effectively fatal to a pike.
I hope this article helps you in some way, feel free too
leave comments and good luck setting up your own pike
fishing tackle set.
