Travel Agency Selection Tips
The more time you spend preparing for your
vacation the better your travels will be. If
you can afford a travel agent, they do most
of the foot work for you. This will save you
time and lets face it, travel agencies are
professionals. Doing what they do every day,
they have much more experience than the
average traveler. The trick is selecting the
right travel agent for you.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Just because a travel agency is in the
Yellowpages doesn't mean they will provide
you with the kind of vacation experience you
deserve. Do a background check by looking up
their credentials. Most agents display their
certificates proudly. If you don't see their
certificates being displayed they may have
something to hide. Calling or asking them in
person is usually all it takes. It is
doubtful they will lie about this but it
never hurts to see the proof! Travel agent
classifications are; CTC, CTA and DS.
(Certified Travel Counselor, Certified
Travel Associate and Destination
Specialist.)
The most respected travel agent
certification is CTC. This certification
only goes to agents with at least 5 years of
travel experience. They also have to finish
an academic study program and pass the exam.
You can visit the CTA's website to locate a
CTC certified agent in your area.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Before contacting a travel agent do some
initial research of your own. Decide your
destination and educate yourself before
making an appointment to visit your travel
agent. Once you decide where you want to
travel visit the area's chamber of commerce
website or visitors bureau. Absorb as much
information as you can. Then when you visit
your travel agent they can give you more
informed advice based on their experience
and former clients experiences as well. Get
an early start. Just because you plan to use
a travel agent doesn't mean you don't need
time. Even travel agents get far better
deals when booking in advance. Give yourself
at least 4 months to get the best travel
options and price selections. If you plan on
vacationing during the holidays give your
travel agent 6 months to offer you the best
deals.
DISCUSS YOUR
INTERESTS
Make sure your travel agent understands what
you want to get out of your vacation. Tell
them your interests, hobbies etc. and why
you chose your particular destination. This
will help them set up activities of
interest. If you want to just relax make
sure they understand that. Let them know if
you want a busy itinerary, no itinerary or
just a few activities on your vacation.
EXPLAIN YOUR BUDGET
Your agent should know if you want to stay
in a 5 star hotel or in a 2 star hotel.
Don't be shy, it's their job. If you are on
a tight budget just tell them. This will
help you get the most of your vacation
within your own financial limitations. This
is very important.
